This poem is based off the prompt, "Without Poetry, Who Am I?" from the poet Karen Richards.

Though this prompt appears on her list of April prompts, it feels appropriate to post in the immediate aftermath of NaPoWriMo.

I'd be lost if I didn't have my words. As my voice comes out haltingly when I try to speak. I can only express emotions by stammering and crying.

But when I write, I'm able to take myself to new places, explore old ones and make sense of everything that my life is and will be. It's how I tell my story.

And I wouldn't want it any other way. Poetry brings me to life.

The poem:

Without poetry, who am I?

A question I refuse to contemplate
As without words, there's only a body here

I have enough trouble as it is expressing myself
It's why I stay quiet, reserved and shy

Reponses come out stammering or crying
I would be misunderstood

Without poetry, I don't have a medium
I'm not so great at music, dance or art

Yet the words seem to flow
Whenever I put them into verse and stanza

I don't have a sense of self without the words
To tell my own story, on my own terms

I don't ever want to be without poetry
Words bring affirmation, wisdom and joy

Poetry brings me to life
