Dr. Anand Ranganathan warns that the biggest challenge humanity will face in the very near future is mass job displacement due to artificial intelligence. He argues that AI is rapidly taking over all jobs requiring mental capabilities, including scientific research. As a scientist himself, he predicts he could be jobless in five years because AI can now perform drug and vaccine discovery far more efficiently than humans.

He cites a recent example: a paper published in the prestigious journal *Cell* (from an MIT lab in collaboration with 18 others) where AI designed 41 million novel chemical compounds using just five elements (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and one more). Out of these, seven were synthesized, and four turned out to be the most potent antibiotics ever discovered against deadly MRSA infections — a breakthrough achieved entirely through AI, in a domain scientists have labored in for the past 70 years.

society urgently needs to rethink the future of work and human purpose in an era where AI outperforms humans in cognitive tasks, including high-level scientific innovation.
