Feeling he wasn't getting enough camera time, he quit. So the AD asked me to read his lines and handed me the script. When I told him I already knew the lines as I cast for this part, he ginned.
We did one rehersal and he came to shake my hand and told me "congratulations, you got the part. You're now cast in the film." This was a particular honor as it has one of the best casts of any film I've worked on and a very powerful piece of cinema based on a true stroy.
Realizing a platoon has lost their medic "Pitz" ask my permission to take his place, essentially sacrificing himself for the good of the men. This prompts a hard struggle to get him the recognition he deserves with a congressional medal of honor.
