7.4 magnitude earthquake prompts tsunami alert and coastal evacuation in Chile and Argentina

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Chile and Argentina on May 2, 2025, prompting mass evacuations across Chile’s Magallanes region and the suspension of water activities in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego.

The quake's epicenter was located 219 km south of Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city. Chile issued a tsunami alert, urging people in the Strait of Magellan and Antarctic territories to evacuate to safer ground.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric assured the public that emergency services are on high alert. Meanwhile, in Punta Arenas, evacuations proceeded calmly. No damage or casualties have been reported so far.
